17.10 has problems with embeded intel grafi

robert rottermann
hi there,

when i try to start gparted on a freshly installed ubuntu 17.10

i get:
(gpartedbin:1515): Gtk-WARNING **: cannot open display: :0
Removed /run/systemd/system/-.mount.
Removed /run/systemd/system/run-user-1000.mount.
Removed /run/systemd/system/run-user-121.mount.
Removed /run/systemd/system/tmp.mount.

trying to start synaptic creates a coredum

when i run

susanne@alessia:~$ lspci -nnk | grep -iA2 vga
i get:

00:02.0 VGA compatible controller [0300]: Intel Corporation 2nd
Generation Core Processor Family Integrated Graphics Controller
[8086:0102] (rev 09)
Subsystem: Intel Corporation 2nd Generation Core Processor Family
Integrated Graphics Controller [8086:2002]
        Kernel driver in use: i915

can anybody give me an idea, how to fix this?

thanks
robert

this is by design ... (wayland does not allow it in general, which is
one of the reasons why in 18.04 ubuntu switched back to Xorg by
default)

seeĀ https://bugzilla.redhat.com/show_bug.cgi?id=1274451

Those graphics should not be a problem with 17.10

Make sure you are not logging in with Wayland.  On the login screen
click on the circular icon to the right of the user name and select
Ubuntu on X (or something similar).
